Visual arts with 'people of the eye'
Since 2022 we have delivered three projects with members of Sheffield's Deaf community, using photography, drama and zine-making.
We know that many Deaf adults have experienced, ‘a sense of loss, huge struggles with communication, an identity crisis as they try to grow up in a world that doesn't understand them’ (British Deaf Association). The workshops have helped to improve participants’ wellbeing as they find strength, comfort and confidence in expressing their shared experience through a variety of visual arts.
In 2025 the group created a zine together, documenting their experiences of being Deaf in a hearing world. The Deaf Power zine was launched in March 2026. Read more here.
