We launched the Deaf Power Zine at the end of March as part of an exhibition with invited guests.

 

It was a wonderful evening, celebrating our brilliant group and sharing the important message of Deaf awareness with guests from across Sheffield’s hearing and Deaf communities.

 

The event involved a presentation in BSL from our participants and a keynote speech from Sharon Hirshman, a Deaf Social Worker at Sheffield City Council, who also wrote the Foreword for the zine. Sharon shared powerful and moving words about the history of audism – discrimination toward Deaf people – and the importance of protecting and strengthening British Sign Language and Deaf identity.

 

This is just the beginning of our campaign to keep raising Deaf awareness and improving access to services for Deaf people in Sheffield and beyond.
